Privacy policy
This policy explains exactly what happens to information when you use onlinechess.me. It is short because the site collects very little.
The short version
There are no accounts, no sign-up, no cookies, and no analytics or advertising trackers. You can play a full game without giving us anything. Your settings and your game in progress are saved in your own browser and are never sent to us.
What is stored on your device
The site uses your browser's local storage, which stays on your computer or phone and is not transmitted anywhere. It holds two things:
- Your preferences — board theme, sound on or off, and whether legal-move hints are shown.
- Your game in progress — the moves played, the clocks, and the board orientation, so a refresh does not lose your game.
You can remove all of it at any time by clearing site data for onlinechess.me in your browser settings. Nothing breaks; the site simply starts fresh.
What our server records
The site is hosted on Heroku, a Salesforce platform. Like any web server, it writes standard request logs that can include your IP address, the page requested, the time, and your browser's user-agent string. These logs exist for security and to diagnose faults. We do not use them to build profiles, and we do not sell or share them.
Third parties
The site makes one request to a third party: web fonts are loaded from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). Requesting a font necessarily reveals your IP address to Google, and that request is governed by Google's own privacy policy. If the fonts do not load, the site falls back to fonts already on your device and everything keeps working.
Beyond that, nothing on the page contacts an outside service. The computer opponent runs entirely on your own device, so your moves are never uploaded for analysis.
Children
Chess is played by people of every age and the site is suitable for children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children, because the site does not ask for personal information at all.
Your rights
Because we hold no account and no personal profile, there is normally nothing for us to export or delete on request. If you believe we hold information about you and want to ask about access, correction, or deletion, write to manish@onlinechess.me and we will respond.
Changes
If this policy changes we will update the date above. Material changes will be described on this page rather than made quietly.
